When a hankering for fried chicken served with all of the best country cooking sides arises, a little drive to the outskirts of Montgomery County likely holds the perfect cure in Red’s Little Schoolhouse Restaurant.
After all, with more than 30 years in business, Red’s Little Schoolhouse can certainly teach us all a thing or two when it comes to locally-grown vegetables, made-from-scratch pies and deliciously crunchy fried chicken.
The building that houses the restaurant got its start as a one-room school called Hills Chapel Community School in 1910. Following years of sitting abandoned after the school’s closure in 1960, Red Deese purchased the property and opened up the restaurant in 1985 after adding two dining areas to the building. The Deese family has been serving up good food and southern hospitality ever since.
Originally, Red Deese and his daughter, Debbie, planned to use the building to house a catering business while feeding locals here and there, but as more and more hungry customers showed up each time they opened their doors, Debbie Deese said they decided to make it a restaurant full-time.
